HOW TO DRAW EYELASHES

Even if you draw the most fabulous eyes on you models, the lack of thick, nicely curved eyelashes may ruin the look and make your drawing less glamourous. In fashion illustration we don’t focus on realistic proportions. Our goal is to exaggerate the features that will help us make the sketch more high fashion, more glamorous. And eyelashes is one of these features. Let’s see how to draw them!

Step 1: Draw the eye

Before starting to draw the eyelashes, we need a drawing of an eye. If you have doubts how to do this part, refer to the step-by-step tutorial “How to draw eyes” .

Step 2: Upper Eyelashes

Mark off the center of the eye with a dashed line. Start from the center and draw towards the outer corner of the eye. The closer to the corner you are going the longer the lashes should be. The length of the eyelashes grows from the center out! They are also naturally curved, so don’t draw them as straight lines.

MAKE SURE THAT THE EVEN THE LASHES CLOSE TO THE DASHED LINE ARE GOING HIGHER THAN THE EYELID OR ELSE THEY WILL LOOK BOYISH.

Step 3: Thicken the lashes

Another important thing to note about lashes is that the upper ends are thinner than the base. Remember that eyelashes ,just like every other hair on the body, have some thickness in the root. This will make your drawing more realistic and glamorous!

Thicken the base of each lash and make sure the transition to the top is nice and smooth.

Step 4: Second half of upper lashes

Draw the second half of the upper lashes. Start from the centerline and move towards the inside corner of the eye. Space the lashes evenly. The closer you move towards the inside corner, the shorter the lashes will become. Don’t forget to thicken up the roots!

Compared to the outside lashes, the inside ones are shorter, less dense and fewer.

TAKE IN MIND THAT THESE LASHES ARE SHORTER THAN THE OTHER HALF. THEY WON’T REACH HIGHER THAN THE EYELID.

Step 5: Draw the lower lashes

What you need to know about the lashes on the lower eyelid is that they are shorter and straighter than the upper ones. The shortest one is beginning at the centerline and the longest one is on the outside corner of the eye.

TAKE IN MIND THAT THESE LASHES ARE SHORTER THAN THE OTHER HALF. THEY WON’T REACH HIGHER THAN THE EYELID.

Step 6: Variety eyelashes

It’s time to add some more lashes for extra glamorous look! To make the eye look more realistic and vivid we need diversity. In reality, lashes are never so perfectly ordered and equal in thickness and length.

Draw 1-2 lashes between the ones we already made. Feel free to experiment with their length, direction and thickness. Remember to keep the top outside lashes more dense and longer compared to the rest.

Step 7: Eyeliner

Put a thick eyeliner at the base of the lashes to finish the look. First, outline the upper eyelid. Starting with a thinner line from the inside corner. Then go thicker and curve the line up at the outside corner. For the bottom eyeliner start from the outer corner. Don’t extend further than the center of the eye.

Voila! Now you’ve got the perfect eyelashes for the eyes of your fashion sketches. Feel free to make some final touches where needed and erase the dashed line that served as a guide.

I hope that this tutorial was helpful to you and now you have the knowledge and skills to draw stunning eyelashes for your fashion sketches. If you still have the strength and hunger for more knowledge you can also check out “How to draw makeup” to complement the beautiful eyes of your models.
