HOW TO DRAW STOCKINGS

Knowing how to draw stockings is helpful not only for lingerie designers but also for everyone willing to add a sexy vibe to his/her illustrations. In this step by step tutorial, you will learn an easy method to draw stockings, tights or pantyhose in your fashion design sketches. Any formal dress will look more stylish with stockings instead of just barefoot and the sassy designs will become sexier. Have fun!

Step 1: Prepare nice line art

Start by drawing your model’s legs. In order to draw a good stockings illustration, it is essential to have nice legs to start with. If you have trouble drawing them use the “How to draw legs “ tutorial.

Step 2: Coloring the skin tone

Color the legs as if they were not to be dressed. Place shadows at one side of the legs and a gentle highlight at the opposite one. Notice the shadow under the knee.

You don’t want to spend too much time building the perfect shadows and lights, but without them, the illustration may look flat.

The tutorial “How to draw skin shadows” explains where to draw the shadows cast on the human body in fashion sketches.

Step 3: Stockings guidelines

Mark how long the stockings will be with a straight line. Usually, this is somewhere in the upper half of the tights, but not too high.

Next curve the straight line upwards. You want the most bulged out part to be over the knee no matter the pose of the leg.

Step 4: Mark thicker parts

Most stoking and tights have thicker parts where toes are. Some designs are thicker also at the heels area. Draw curved lines to indicate this.

Step 5: Coloring the stockings

For this step, you can use watercolors, pencils or pastels. The media doesn’t really matter as long as you lay down a semitransparent layer of color. Push lighter or use more water and apply a gray tone all over.

Step 6: Add shadows

Add shadows to the stockings at the same places you did with the skin. Make sure you don’t lose the transparency of the fabric.

At this point, you can draw decorative elements (like small flowers near the ankle or a thin decorative hem at the side/back). Unleash your creativity!

Color the thicker parts of the stockings with the color of the shadows to make them look more opaque.

Step 7: Draw the details of the stocking

Add the position of the belt and the string that holds the stockings. The belt is somewhere around the upper line of the underwear. It can be higher, but not lower than that.

Step 8: Make it beautiful!

Draw the lace at the top. If you need help check the “How to draw lace” tutorial.

To draw the belt start with two parallel lines places over the hips. Curve the lines down to show that the model’s body has volume. Draw the “ears”- they shouldn’t be too short or wide.

Leave it like this or complete the belt design with small buttons.

Step 8: The belt and the string

Draw lace to cover the belt and finish the linking string. Don’t forget to add a small ellipse to show that its length can be adjusted.

Hopefully, this how-to-draw stockings tutorial was helpful to make your fashion sketches even better. If you want to combine different effects the “How to draw fishnet” tutorial will show you one of the available options. The rest is in your creative imagination!

Happy drawing!
