Learning how to draw a corset and corset laces will improve your fashion sketches and sexy lingerie designs. The corset is a compliment for the female body and can be designed to suit evening gowns, luxurious lingerie, and even casual wear. In this tutorial, you will also learn how to draw lacing, which has so many different applications in fashion design, not to mention the shoelaces!
Step 1: The base
Start by drawing a nice, curvy female torso. Make sure you make the waistline slightly smaller than usual since this is the effect corsets cause. Use the “How to draw female torso” tutorial to help you.
From the center of the breast pull two vertical lines towards the model’s waist. These are bust Centerlines.
Draw a horizontal line to mark the bustier top line and mark its bottom line.
Step 2: Corset silhouette
Add dimension to your sketch by perfecting your corset’s outlines. Notice how the bottom line is now slightly curving up and that the corset is outside of the body on the sides.
Change the horizontal line at the bust to a wavy line. The picks of the wave are exactly on bust Centerlines.
DESIGNING NEW SILHOUETTES IS THE BEST PART OF BEING A FASHION DESIGNER. USE YOUR IMAGINATION TO CREATE INTERESTING TOP AND BOTTOM LINES FOR YOUR COLLECTIONS!
Step 3: Cut it!
Use the bust Centerlines to build the so-called “princess seams”, that is typical for this kind of outfit.
Follow the changes: the line is moving out, while on the chest. Then it goes slightly in like the corset outline does, and at reaching the waistline it goes out again.
Draw two parallel lines between the cheats – this is where the corset closing is about to happen.
Step 4: Draw some lacing holes
On the sides of the vertical line, you just made start drawing small circles. They represent the holes that the lacing will go through in order to close the corset.
Make sure the holes are nicely aligned both horizontally and vertically.
FOR THE SAKE OF BETTER EXPLANATION THE HOLES ARE IN DIFFERENT COLORS. THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE LACING WILL GO THROUGH ALL THE BLUE HOLES. THE LEFT SIDE OF THE LACING WILL GO THROUGH ALL THE RED HOLES
Draw the first part of the lacing between the bottom two holes.
Step 5: Right lace
Here is where the magic happens! Starting from the bottom-most blue hole move up, using diagonal lines. You will go through only the blue holes and remember the rule of thumb: Start behind, finish upfront!
This means that the lacing will start from the vertical line next to hole N1 (creating the illusion it is behind) and will finish in hole N2 going over the vertical line.
Erase all unnecessary lines.
Step 6: Left lace
Basically the logic is the same as in the previous step, except for one little detail. The left part of the lacing will go under the right one.
Meaning that you should stop when you reach the already drawn lacing.
Use the same technique as in the previous step, but touching only red holes this time.
Step 7: Draw the ribbon
The corset lacing is ready, now it’s time to draw a beautiful ribbon and clean up your illustration from unnecessary lines and give it a nice color of your choice. For a more finished and stunning look of your fashion illustration, you can match the corset with pairs of leather pants and highheels.
I hope this step by step tutorial was useful for you, now get inspired and draw some beautiful, sexy corsets for your fashion portfolio!
Happy drawing!
